We're launching a new project!

Adam Jensen originally hails from a video game series titled Deus Ex. For us, he is the ideal character for experimenting with the new technology, both in terms of content and execution. To that end, we are breathing new life into this character.

I'm sure many of you out there are familiar with Adam Jensen. A lot of you have probably played through the games from back then, and some of you are probably wondering, just like me, when the next installment will be released. After all, the series was one of the best of its time. But it seems to me that we'll have to wait many more years for it.

For that reason, and out of love for this character - who, alongside all the Marvel heroes, is truly multi-layered - we’re dedicating our upcoming project to a short film starring Adam Jensen. After playing through the last two installments Human Revolution and Mankind Divided twice and literally soaking up the world in them each time, I’m itching to bring this dystopia to life myself, essentially as a fan film.

What has happened so far

It all started when I remodeled and rigged the character as a Blender learning project. In doing so, I tried to stay as close to the original as possible. For example, if you look at Adam’s hair, you can see that he has almost the same hairstyle as in the game, but this time based on Blender’s Particle Hair System. Building on this, the next step was: “How photorealistically can I recreate Adam?” I was inspired by Chris Jones, who has produced truly amazing results. This part is nearly complete and will be covered in more detail in a separate article.

What happens next

Next, we plan to partially rework and partially reimagine three additional characters for this project: Elisa, the AI from Deus Ex, and two members of the Prague Police. After that, we’ll finalize the film’s script, which is currently still in the concept phase. We’re planning a short article on this as well. Then we’ll begin building the three sets where the short story takes place. This will be followed by animating the characters - I’m very curious to see how well text-to-animation works and how usable video-to-mocap results already are. We’ve already worked with this in the past.

Finally - and I’m not even sure myself how well this will turn out - we’re going to push the limits of photorealism. We’re curious to see which final look will be the right one.

See you then, Winni & Doreen.
